Insider Trading: Celebrity Makeup Artists and Stylists Spill Their Secrets
SMW Women’s Fashion, Makeup & Beauty Tips
By Erin Donnelly,  updated 7/15/2008 at 1:09:12 PM

The last time you had a team of experts assembled with the single goal of making you beautiful was prom—assuming your best friend, mom, and kid sister can be considered “experts,” and hair-sprayed bangs that touched the ceiling can be considered “beautiful.” After all, it's not like you're a big-deal movie star with the luxury of lounging in a white terry-cloth robe while the biggest names in beauty transform you into a goddess.

Silly girl. Just because your name isn't JLo doesn't mean you can't treat yourself to some professional (beauty) help. And if you won't go to the pros, we're just going to have to bring the pros to you.

Single Minded Women has rounded up the top hairstylists and makeup artists to the stars to dish about spring's hottest beauty trends—from playful bursts of color to sexy bedhead hair to dramatic lips—and tips for achieving these looks at home. Why should runway models and A-list starlets have all the fun?

Pro: Makeup artist Julie Harris

Clients: Anne Hathaway, Eva Mendes (shown), Hayden Panettiere, Elisha Cuthbert, and Sarah Michelle Gellar, to name a few

She Says: Color is a big trend this season—think red and hot pink lips, colored eyeliners in bright greens and blues, and even hints of glitter on the eyelids.

Tools of the Trade: MAC cosmetics and NARS have lots of great bold colors for lips; I love Russian Red from MAC and Roman Holiday from NARS. Christian Dior also has a beautiful gloss called Red Stockings.

Mouthing Off: To achieve a bold lip color, apply the color with your fingertip. Start in the center of the lip and leave the edges softer. Outline the lips with a neutral lip liner to keep the edges soft.Anne Hathaway loves a bright pink applied to the center of her lip! For a bold red lip color, be sure to blot the lips with a tissue after application to prevent the color from bleeding. Finish with a gloss to set the red lipstick.

Eye Spy: If you are wearing spring's pastel colors on the lid, try YSL's bright blue liquid eyeliner. Navy and bright blue make the eyes pop without looking overdone.

Pro: Victor Cembellin, MAC Senior Artist

Clients: Include Amy Adams, America Ferrera, Paris Hilton, and Jenny McCarthy

He Says: One of the biggest trends to hit the catwalks for spring/summer 2008 was the return of neon color! From shoes to bags to ties and definitely to makeup, colors had attitude, were loud in spirit and overall had a clean, sporty vibe in reference to fall's vintage Hollywood throwbacks.

How to Wear Spring's Bright Hues: Calibrate your colors! If a muted pink lip gloss is your thing, simply turn up the voltage and choose a shade two or three shades brighter to ride spring's color trend wave. Secondly, don't be a commitment-phobe! If you're going to go with color for spring…GO FOR IT! The true trend for eyes and lips is to wear shadows and lip colors to their full color potential! Layer it on—don't blot to sheer out the impact.

Shades to Look for This Season: Tangerine-orange, neon pink, and true violets for the lips. For the eyes, look for turquoise, true blues, and acid greens. (Shown: MAC spokeswoman Eve.)

Pro: Star hairstylist Oscar Blandi

Clients: Jennifer Garner (shown), Jessica Biel, Kelly Ripa, Faith Hill, and Jessica Alba

He Says: It's all about the sexy bedhead. Watch Oscar create this “messy” look for Jenni Kayne's Fall 2008 show from New York Fashion Week.

Tools of the Trade: Oscar used Oscar Blandi Volumizing Spray to create the depth and volume in each braided look. He also used Oscar Blandi Jasmine Oil Serum to finish each look. The amount of product used is pretty minimal to give it a much more organic look.

Pro: Marco Maranghello, Paula Abdul's official “American Idol” stylist and senior stylist for the John Barrett Salon

Clients: In addition to Paula, Marco's worked with Sienna Miller, Lydia Hearst, the Hilton sisters, and the models on Chanel's catwalk

He Says: Soft, romantic waves are a feminine and classic look for spring.

How to Score Loose Waves: 1. Start with 80% dry hair parted in the direction that best complements your facial features. 2. Take a dollop of white styling cream (Marco recommends John Barrett's Be Hold) and smooth it around the ends, working your way up to the roots. 3. Take one-inch sections of your hair and twirl them around your finger, creating a complete spiral; do this all around your head. 4. Lightly spray a silicone-based shine spray to protect your hair, create shine and get rid of any frizz. 4. Let your hair air-dry.

Pro: Beauty guru Olivia Chantecaille, Creative Director of Chantecaille

Celebrity Fans: Kate Bosworth and Jennifer Aniston

She Says: My favorite look for spring is bright lips.
Tools of the Trade: This look is easy and fresh with Chantecaille's new Lip Chic in Zinnia (shown) and Amaryllis. They go on like a lipstick and feel like a gloss in pretty floral shades.

Pro: Eugene Toye, Stylist at Rita Hazan Salon in NYC

Clients: Christy Turlington, Brooke Shields, Kate Moss, Kim Cattrall, Ashley Judd, Jennifer Esposito, Jessica Simpson, Ashlee Simpson and more

He Says: For spring, we are seeing natural waves and more beachy-looking hair. This look works for most hair textures and is easy to do at home.

Catching the Wave: I recommend washing the hair at night, and drying about halfway. Next, comb a good amount of mousse all the way through the hair, from root to end, and secure the hair in a tight, very high ponytail with a cloth scrunchie to prevent marks.Wrap the excess hair around the scrunchie in a high bun and sleep with it.By the morning, you will take out the scrunchie to fine beautiful, natural waves.Just tousle your fingers through the hair, and go!

Pro: Jordy Poon, Makeup Artist at Rita Hazan Salon in NYC

Clients: Click here to see some of Jordy's high-fashion editorial work.

He Says: One of the biggest trends in makeup right now is using icy sorbet colors like pastel purple, powdery pink, and bright, soft peach and tangerine.

How To Pull It Off: Do either cheeks, lips or eyes (only one) and make sure it's a soft wash of color, nothing too intense. It's also important to still keep definition with a full brow and full lash, otherwise you look washed out.
